We had a
great day yesterday thanks to Mary Arrigan and her book Milo and the Long Lost
Warriors which was nominated for World Book Day 2014. Mary read from her book to
a bunch of 17 school children who hung on every word.
The
children arrived fashionably late and we could hear their excitement as they entered the room and ran towards the beanbags and coloured mats we had lay out.
When they
settled Mary began to read and you could hear a pin drop around the place. I
couldn’t believe my eyes it was the first time I have ever seen kids of nine
and ten sit still for more than a minute.
Talking to Mary
before the others arrived she told me how she got the idea for the book. She said
that she has been a regular visitor to Dublinia over the past few years and has found
it to be a good day out for all, including children and that is why she wrote the
book.
It came as
a shock when we heard Mary wrote a book about a school trip to Dublinia but we
are glad she did! It shows that we must be doing something right if a
successful author includes us into her writings.
When Mary
finished reading all the kids hit her with some remarkable questions which gave
everyone an insight into Mary as a writer and as a human being.
Once all
the questions came to an end the children posed for pictures with their new
books and sat down for their lunch. In my opinion it was a win for them, they
got to visit Dublinia, listen to a famous author, and receive a free copy of
Milo and The Long Lost Warriors and get some free goodies from Dublinia.
We would
like to thank Mary Arrigan and the organisers of World Book Day for what we
consider to be another successful day here at Dublinia!
